Chapter 7 - Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
Prescribed Learning Outcomes:
D2 – Represent data, using exponential and logarithmic functions, to solve problems.

7.1/7.2 - Relating the characteristics of an Exponential Function to Its Equation
These two sections introduce the equation and graph of an exponential function. You need to be able to recognize increasing and decreasing exponential functions from their graphs and from their equations.
Please watch the exponents video.
Please complete page 439 #1, 2 and page 450 #8-11, 13.

7.3 - Modelling Data Using Exponential Functions
The text book wants you to use technology to find the equations for exponential functions modelling data. However, the technology that is available to us is not easy to use. So I want you to use a simpler method to approximate what the technology would do.
Carefully write down the steps at the end of the video and use them to complete the problems.
Please watch the finding exponential functions video.
Please do page 462 #4-6. Use the process explained on the video to graph the functions and estimate an approximate exponential function then answer the questions in the text.

7.4 - Characteristics of Logarithmic Functions with Base 10 and
Base e
Logarithm functions are reflections of exponential functions, across the y=x line. The y=x line is a diagonal line going through (0,0) and rising to the right with a slope of 1.
This chapter will deal with base 10 and base e only. These two bases are pre-programmed into scientific and graphing calculators so you will be able to use your calculators to calculate and graph them.
Please watch the logarithm introduction video.
Please do page 483 #5,7,8.

7.5 - Modelling Data Using Logarithmic Functions
In this section, you are supposed to use technology to find the equation for the logarithmic function of a given set of data. Our graphing calculators do not do this easily. Instead we will graph the data and find the curve of best fit manually. We will use the curve to estimate information.
Please turn to page 491 of your textbook before starting the log function models video.
Please do page 494 #1, 6, 9. Do not worry about finding the logarithmic function.
