Chapter 6 key ideas
- Be able to translate a polygon
- Be able to reflect a polygon
- Be able to rotate a polygon
- Be able to dilate a polygon, using a stated scale factor
- Be able to perform a combination of these transformations, in the correct order
6.1 Single transformations
Transformations are when you take a shape, usually on a graph, and change it in some way. There are four transformations that we will look at, one at a time, in this section:
Please watch the transformations video and then do page 221 #1-4, page 225 #5-7, page 227 #8-9, page 229 #10-12, page 232 #13-15, page 235 #16-18, and page 237 #1-5.
- translation - shifting a shape to another location on the graph
- reflection - reflecting a shape across a line
- rotation - rotating a shape around a point
- dilation - changing the size of a shape
Please watch the transformations video and then do page 221 #1-4, page 225 #5-7, page 227 #8-9, page 229 #10-12, page 232 #13-15, page 235 #16-18, and page 237 #1-5.
6.2 Multiple transformations
When performing more than one transformation on a shape, there is a special order that you must use. Always do the translation last!
In this section you will be asked to perform multiple transformation. Always reflect or rotate a shape and THEN translate it.
Please watch the multiple transformations video and then do page 242 #1-3, page 245 #4-5, page 248 #6-8, and page 249 #1-4.
